The world woke up to the news of a major fire engulfing the medieval cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris. The building happens to be one of France’s most famous landmarks.
According to officials, the 850-year-old Gothic building’s spire and roof have been destroyed but the main building to include the two bell towers, has been saved.
Firefighters are currently working tirelessly to ensure that the artwork stored inside are safe.
President Emmanuel Macron has since reacted to the news calling it a “terrible tragedy”. The cause of the fire is not yet clear.
However, some officials believe the fire could be linked to the renovation work that was being done after cracks were seen in the stones. the cathedral.
The fire according to reports began around 18:30 (16:30 GMT) and in not time razed the roof of the cathedral, destroying its stained-glass windows and the wooden interior before toppling the spire.
