The month of March has finally ended and it gave us things that had us ‘shook’. We experienced a horrifying tragedy; people taking the Nigerian feminist movement another 20 years into the past; we had Sapele Wonder and a few more press-stopping moments in the third month of 2019.
Here are the things that we have not been able to stop talking about;
1. Etinosa Goes Wild: On Saturday, March 16, 2019, Nigerians woke up to rumours that a Nigerian actor has stripped on live Instagram. Many of us sneered; “it isn’t possible”, others chorused as we all raced to the ‘gram’ to find out for ourselves.
Turns out that Etinosa Idemudia, who has now cemented her name in our minds, stripped to absolutely nothing on Singer, MC Galaxy’s Instagram live as thousands of viewers watched!
There have been claims of alcohol and depression. Many have gone for Galaxy’s throat for not cutting off the live feed while others are pissed at the actress for ‘letting’ alcohol ruin her reputation; a few have gone the ‘Buhari route’ – blaming the president for causing ‘national restlessness’.
2. Sapele Wonder: Early in the month, Nigerians heard about a Sapele girl sent out of school for non-payment of fees. News about the girl spread like wildfire. We couldn’t stop laughing at her smartness, sharp mouth and how she promised to show her school the meaning of ‘stubborn’.
Truth be told, we really should be ashamed that Success (as she was later identified) had to pick one of three: education, flogging or being sent out of school. Thankfully, we didn’t just laugh, people have promised to pay her fees until she’s done with her University education. So, if the government never keeps its promises, hopefully, we do.
3. The Blazing Heat from Hell!
We don’t know if other states in Nigeria are feeling the sting as much, but in Lagos, it feels like somebody ‘carried shoulders’ for the sun and Oga Sun took offence to that. There is no other option. Sometimes if you step out at high noon and your clothes are thin enough, your nose can catch that familiar ‘ironing of clothes’ smell. The heat has been that terrible! Chai!
4. Ita-Faaji Building Collapse:
Now, to the one that broke our hearts, making us all wish we could rewind time so that it would never happen.
On Wednesday, 13 March 2019, we watched in horror as young Nigerians pulled children and adults out of the rubble of a collapsed building in the Ita-Faaji area of Lagos. Apparently, a nursery and primary school was located on the second floor of the three-storey building.
The stories we heard about the parents of the children broke our souls. Fortunately, young Nigerians in the area gathered to help. Our pop diva, Tiwa Savage, paid a visit to the hospital to spread some cheer. Private corporations didn’t fail us either. MTN Foundation provided medical supplies to aid the treatment of the survivors at the General Hospital, Lagos Island.
Our hearts are still with the families that lost loved ones and we cannot begin to imagine the pain they must feel at this time.
March was one heck of a topsy-turvy month – it gave us all the emotions across the spectrum! Anything you want to add to the list?
