Manchester United fell to fifth in the Premier League after tasting defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates with goals from Granit Xhaka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Unai Emery’s side started the better team and dominated proceedings but almost fell behind early on when Romelu Lukaku saw his close range effort cannon off the crossbar.
Arsenal definitely edged it and their threat forced Solskjaer to change his set up, which is credit to Emery. But, despite being second best United have had their chances and hit the woodwork twice. The last 10 minutes of the half were better but they’ve looked lethargic.
Martial’s on the bench and fresh having not played since the PSG first leg last month
Bernd Leno 9/10
Claimed a lot and made good saves. His denial of Lukaku in particular was great, and he’s making excellent decisions when he comes off his line.
Switched off on occasion, but pocketed Romelu Lukaku well.
Laurent Koscielny 8/10
Immense at the back today, with tough blocks and tackles. Exactly what Arsenal need when he’s on this form.
Nacho Monreal 7/10
Made a good block and some intelligent defensive positioning kept things quiet for him.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles 6/10
Dealt with Shaw well enough defensively, but could have done more in the attack, especially backing himself with his pace. Needs to be more mindful of the space behind him.
Aaron Ramsey 7/10
Not the same sort of performance as the North London Derby. He did a lot of defending and tried to work up the field, but often found space limited in front of him.
Granit Xhaka 8/10
Weird goal. De Gea just went the wrong way. He hit it well, though. Physical and determined in the midfield, with a real shift in defence.
Sead Kolasinac 6/10
Shakey going forward, with few moments of genuine quality, but the intent to overlap is always there. Some good crosses and solid defending.
Mesut Ozil 5/10
Ran his legs off, but he didn’t provide any creative spark today in a No 10 role, offered the freedom to dictate play as he saw it. If this was an audition for more starts, it was a poor one.
Alexandre Lacazette 8/10
Dawdled on a decent chance with only De Gea to beat, and was deflected. Some very neat feet on occasion, and some good strength to shrug off defenders too. Deserved a goal.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 6/10
Wasted a decent early chance on the counter. Put away the penalty central. Risky. He pressed well up top but there is no doubt that Lacazette is in the better striking form.
Alex Iwobi 6/10
Injected some effort and grit into the game late, constantly a nuisance to the Manchester defence.
Denis Suarez 6/10
Very deft touches to break out on the counter and he looked quite lively.
Eddie Nketiah 6/10
Drew a professional foul from Luke Shaw.
David De Gea 3/10
Just a bizarre goal conceded against Xhaka. Went completely the wrong way on a swervy long-ranger. Dived for a central penalty.
Ashley Young 6/10
Playing in the right of a back three he managed to bomb down the wing and put in some accurate crosses.
Chris Smalling 7/10
Defended well and kept Aubameyang pretty quiet. Undeterred by another idiot pitch invader.
Victor Lindelof 5/10
Looked pretty wayward in terms of positioning and didn’t deal with Lacazette well.
Luke Shaw 7/10
Very good going forward, with a high work rate, but better with neat touches and passes as Maitland-Niles had him for pace.
Diogo Dalot 5/10
A little lukewarm tonight – it might be worth him playing more defensively in future as he wasn’t a major creative spark.
Frequently easily beaten and sometimes wasteful with the ball. Let his frustration get the better of him when he shoulder barged Lacazette in the area.
Nemanja Matic 4/10
Pretty static and easily turned. Looked very rusty on his return.
Paul Pogba 5/10
Lost his head a little in the second half, should have been booked for a clothesline on Ramsey.
Marcus Rashford 6/10
Full of energy and constantly trying to create something with clever flicks or runs. His excellent pass to Lukaku should have been rewarded with a goal, but he was also a little selfish on occasion, trying to do too much himself.
Romelu Lukaku 5/10
Should have finished the chance Rashford put on a plate for him in particular, but there were a number of chances he fudged. His work rate was good but that touch was not good enough today.
Anthony Martial 7/10
Looked bright on return, with a few good tricks.
